Semi-synthetic oils (also called 'synthetic blends') are blends of mineral oil with no more than 30% synthetic oil. Designed to have many of the benefits of synthetic oil without matching the cost of pure synthetic oil. Motul introduced the first semi-synthetic motor oil in 1966.

Mineral oils are based on oil that comes from dear old Mother Earth which has been refined. Synthetic oils are entirely concocted by chemists wearing white lab coats in oil company laboratories. For more info, see the section on synthetics further down the page. The only other type is semi-synthetic, sometimes called premium, which is a blend of the two. It is safe to mix the different types, but it's wiser to switch completely to a new type rather than mixing.

In fact, sun exposure causes many of the skin changes that we think of as a normal part of aging. Over time, the sun's ultraviolet (UV) light damages the fibers in the skin called elastin. When these fibers break down, the skin begins to sag, stretch, and lose its ability to go back into place. The skin also bruises and tears more easily -- taking longer to heal. So while sun damage to the skin may not be apparent when you're young, it will definitely show later in life.

How Does the Sun Change Skin?

Exposure to the sun causes:

Pre-cancerous (actinic keratosis) and cancerous (basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma) skin lesions
Benign tumors
Fine and coarse wrinkles
Freckles
Discolored areas of the skin, called mottled pigmentation
A yellow discoloration of the skin
The dilation of small blood vessels under the skin
How Can I Protect Skin From the Sun?
Nothing can completely undo sun damage, although the skin can sometimes repair itself. So, it's never too late to begin protecting yourself from the sun. Follow these tips to help prevent sun-related skin problems:

Apply sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or greater at least 30 minutes before sun exposure and then every few hours thereafter

If the coolant level is not between the reservoir marks the cooling system may have a leak.

The lights in and around your vehicle are not only a convenience they are a safety precaution. All lights on your vehicle should be working at all times, if fact it's against the law for any exterior lights on your car not to be working. If it was designed by the manufacturer to work on your vehicle it must work at all times. Make it a regular check for your vehicle to assure the proper operation for your lights.

Yet, major health campaigns in Washington, Chicago, Illinois, and New York City are promoting female condoms to curb the spread of HIV/AIDS.
Although the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved female condoms in 1993, they haven't exactly been embraced.
After a second version of the female condom was approved by the FDA in 2009, HIV/AIDS health campaigns began distributing them in major cities and offering training on how to use them at local salons and community centers.
The condoms are another tool to empower and protect women from sexually transmitted infections and pregnancy, health advocates say. But the question remains: Will women actually use them?
Aside from the mechanics, the products are hard to find and cost more than male condoms.
They're pretty much irrelevant, said Alexandra Katehakis, a certified sex therapist and clinical director of the Center for Healthy Sex in Los Angeles, California.

As the ladies of The View speculated on the rise of "late-blooming lesbians" (thank you, Whoopi), Elisabeth Hasselbeck put in her two cents:

"I’ll tell you what’s happening, it’s that older men are going for younger women, leaving the women with NO ONE."

Joy Behar responded forcefully to Hasselbeck's logic, which does seem to strongly imply that being gay is a choice, saying, "Being gay is not just holding hands and walking through the tulips. I don't think you suddenly wake up one day and say, 'Oh, I wanted to do that.' You wanted to do it, but you were just trapped in a system that has just said, 'get married.'"

Hasselbeck then tried to back down, saying that perhaps said older women simply wanted companionship, but not a sexual relationship. Which is of course absurd, and plays off two damaging stereotypes about women - that we are not as sexually desirous as men, and that we are not independent. And of course, apart from being sexist, it's homophobic.

As usual, I find The View to be an inane show (and this conversation did not bode well to begin with), but I really do question why we continue to pay attention to people like this. And of course, by writing this post, I'm helping to fan the flames, but it frustrates me endlessly that anyone takes her seriously, or that this kind of homophobia is tolerated at all.

Are u felling sad? Have a good cry. You’ll feel better.

It has been said that laughter is the best medicine, but crying can also be very cathartic.

Judith Orloff, M.D., author of Emotional Freedom: Liberate Yourself From Negative Emotions and Transform Your Life, writes, “For over 20 years as physician, I’ve witnessed time and again the healing power of tears. Tears are your body’s release valve for stress, sadness, grief, anxiety and frustration.” In a Huffington Post article, Dr. Orloff says she actually encourages her patients to cry.

Tears produced as a physical reflex are 98 percent water, but emotional tears also excrete stress hormones and other harmful toxins caused by stress.

Physically, tears lubricate your eyes, remove irritants, and reduce stress hormones. After a good cry, there is a decrease in breathing and heart rates as we enter a calmer emotional and biological state.

Emotionally, it’s something many of us instinctively know — crying doesn’t solve a problem, but it offers relief and makes us feel better. We don’t often admit it, but some of us have been known to plan a good cry to achieve that relief.

Dr. Orloff warns that suppression of emotions can lead to depression. “Thank God our bodies have this capacity. Let your tears flow to purify stress and negativity.”

Last year, Science Daily reported on an analysis by Tel Aviv University evolutionary biologist Dr. Oren Hasson, showing that tears not only signal physiological distress, but function as an evolution-based mechanism to bring people closer together. Dr. Hasson called crying “a highly evolved behavior.”

William Shakespeare knew it. “To weep is to make less the depth of grief.”

Charles Dickens knew it. “Heaven knows we need never be ashamed of our tears, for they are rain upon the blinding dust of earth, overlying our hard hearts.”

Golda Meir knew it. “Those who do not know how to weep with their whole heart don’t know how to laugh either.”

You don’t really have to plan it, but neither should you fight it. Sometimes a good cry is just what the doctor ordered.

Women Convicted of Homicide for Having Abortions

Six women are serving long prison terms in the central Mexican state of Guanajuato after being convicted of homicide for terminating their pregnancies.

The women, all poor and with little education, have served between three and eight years of the 25- to 30-year sentences handed down by state courts.

“We’re going to put in direct appeals to the federal judiciary,” Veronica Cruz, the director of the Centro Las Libres, which provides assistance to the women and to another 160 Guanajuato women facing abortion-related charges, told Efe.

A woman who had received a similar sentence to those that are being served by the six women for murder was released recently thanks to the intercession of Cruz’s organization.

Of these seven cases, one was a spontaneous abortion, two others were undertaken because of rape and the rest were for accidental pregnancies, Cruz said.

“All the men that got them pregnant abandoned them and accused them” of getting the abortions, said the activist.

Since the beginning of the decade, more than 40 women have been put on trial for abortion, which is punishable by up to three years in prison under the Guanajuato penal code.

“The government always has denied that it imprisoned people for the crime of abortion. We had to go from prison to prison to verify it,” said the Centro Las Libres director.

The legislation regarding abortion varies in Mexico’s 32 separate jurisdictions. While in Mexico City it is legal, some states continue to treat abortion as a criminal offense.

Even so, federal law includes some circumstances under which any woman, regardless of where she may live, can have an abortion, namely in the case of rape or risk to her life because of the pregnancy.

In recent years – during which the right-wing National Action Party has governed the country – the conditions under which women can have abortions have become more difficult.

Pro-life groups have harshly criticized the law decriminalizing abortion approved by the capital with the support of leftist Mayor Marcelo Ebrard.

Conservative-led Guanajuato was the only state in the country that refused to promulgate a law against gender violence, as had been federally mandated.

“It was said that violence against women in Guanajuato doesn’t exist and that (such a law) was not necessary,” Cruz said. Some years ago, she noted, the authorities tried to eliminate rape as a justifying factor for having an abortion but the opposition of activists prevented that.

Guanajuato – with Mexico’s highest rate of teen pregnancy – refuses to teach sex education in the schools.

1. Discover which day of the week is the lowest for petrol, and be ready to fill up on that day.

2. Don't wait until the fuel tank is empty before you buy petrol.

3. Using the tyre pressures recommended by the car manufacturer gives the car optimal results between handling, tyre wear and softness of ride. By increasing these pressures by only 2-4 PSI, not only increases fuel economy, but also increases tyre life and handling response.

4. If you are sitting at a set of traffic lights or in traffic for an extended length of time, put your car into neutral or park. This can save a significant amount of fuel.

5. If you live within walking distance of your local shopping venue, walk there and back, and arrange to have your shopping delivered by the store.

6. Always try to accelerate gradually and steadily rather than putting the foot down hard, taking it off quickly and then having to brake to stop from running into the car in front. This not only saves fuel but also makes your brakes last longer.

Gay Marriage in Argentina

On Thursday, Argentina's Senate voted in favor of legalizing gay marriage by 33 votes to 27 with three abstentions, making Argentina the first country in Latin America to legalize same-sex marriage.

The bill, which grants same-sex couples all the rights, responsibilities and benefits of heterosexual marriage, including the right to jointly adopt, was debated in the Senate for around 14 hours. Argentina's Chamber of Deputies already passed the legislation just a few weeks ago. The legislation has become a flagship piece of legislation for President Cristina Fernandez's center-left government though the debate in fact split both major political parties. The president is expected to sign the bill into law within the next few days.

From the Associated Press:

"From today onward, Argentina is a more just and democratic country," said Maria Rachid, president of the Argentine Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender federation. The law "not only recognizes the rights of our families, but also the possibility of having access to health care, to leave a pension, to leave our assets to the people with whom we have shared many years of life, including our children," she said.

The 33-27 Senate vote was tallied shortly before dawn, after a marathon debate that touched on religion, ethics, the legacy of Argentina's dictatorship and the challenges of raising children. There were three abstentions. Since the lower house already approved it, the law takes effect within days.

Gays and lesbians who have already found Buenos Aires to be a welcoming place to live will likely rush to the altar, but same-sex couples from other countries will need to live in Argentina before becoming eligible, and the necessary residency documents can take months to obtain.

The passage of the bill was not without controversy. Determined to oppose the bill and bring that message directly to Argentina's lawmakers, approximately 60,000 people marched on Congress with Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, a leading voice of opposition, organizing the event and commenting "children need to have the right to be raised and educated by a father and a mother." While civil unions proved quite controversial also, they did win support with a substantial body of religious conservatives with the caveat of a ban on same-sex couples adopting, yet, in granting gay marriage rights, Argentina has managed to bypass civil unions and has achieved full equality.

Civil unions for same-sex partners have been legal in Uruguay and some states in Mexico and Brazil for quite a while now. Gay marriage is also legal in Mexico City.
Even before this historic vote there had been a couple of same-sex marriages in other areas of Argentina. Gay couples were able to obtain marriage licenses through challenging Argentina's gay marriage ban on the grounds that it was unconstitutional, whereby they could receive individual permission to marry, but these challenges have met with mixed success and, for obvious reasons, were laborious and costly for the parties involved.

This issue was perhaps brought into focus by gay couple Alex Freyre and Jose Maria di Bello who attempted to marry on December 1 of last year after managing to secure permission from a lower court in Buenos Aires. This was immediately challenged by a higher court who, not disputing the right to same-sex civil marriage as such, contested the lower court's power to make such a ruling. The couple eventually did marry, but their case was set to go before the Supreme Court at some point next year. Obviously, with the legalization of same-sex marriages this now becomes redundant.

With this signed, Argentina joins Canada, the Netherlands, Spain, South Africa, Norway, Belgium, Sweden, Portugal and Iceland in allowing gay marriage.

Nepal looks set to be the next country to legalize same-sex marriage as lawmakers are busy hammering out a new constitution that will grant a broad set of rights and protections for gay and lesbian couples.

The Golf Bluemotion uses a variety of technological enhancements. These include a Start/Stop system, regenerative braking, hill hold, longer gear ratios, low rolling resistance tires, and a multifunction computer showing recommended gear changes for greater fuel economy. The Start/Stop system turns the car off when it is sitting rather than keeping the engine idling.

The car emits about one third of a pound of carbon dioxide per mile. What Green Car rated the 2009 Toyota Prius at 72.2 MPG, and 89 grams of CO2 per kilometer. Their rating of a plug-in Prius was even lower, at 100 MPG, and 67 grams of CO2 per kilometer.

What was not mentioned in the referring articles is that the diesel engine in the Golf can be run on biodiesel, which reduces emissions even further.

“A 1998 biodiesel lifecycle study, jointly sponsored by the US Department of Energy and the US Department of Agriculture, concluded biodiesel reduces net CO2 emissions by 78 percent compared to petroleum diesel.”

A Prius does not use a diesel engine, so it can’t burn the less polluting biodiesel fuel. Diesel engines can also be converted to use waste vegetable oil.

Why should you check your tyres?
Worn tyres significantly impede the performance of your car - low tread depths reduce the effectiveness of braking, steering, and acceleration, all of which are vital in staying safe. What are a few minutes put aside now to check your tyres, when you compare it to your own safety and that of your family?
What Should I Check?
The TyreSafe.org has devised a five point tyre check that we strongly recommend you complete:

Check overall condition of tyres, including inner and outer sidewalls.

Tyre Pressures
A tyre does not have to look flat to be under inflated. To be safe you should check the pressure at least once a fortnight. If you are unsure as to what the correct pressure is for your vehicle, have a look in the Vehicle Manual.

Always remember that tyre pressure should only be tested when your tyres are cold - a good guideline is to leave them for an hour after driving so that they can cool down.
If you drive around on under or over inflated tyres, your vehicle's handling will seriously affected – in most cases the vehicle will become unstable.
The wrong tyre pressure also increases tyre wear, significantly shortening its lifespan and increasing the chances of the tyre failing whilst driving.

Women who habitually wear high heels have shorter muscle fibers in their calves and thicker Achilles' tendons than those who walk in flat shoes, researchers say. The result? The heel lovers’ tendons stiffen and become harder to stretch, which could explain why walking hurts after kicking off the Jimmy Choos, according to a small study published in the Journal of Experimental Biology.

Stilettos may be sexy, but raising the back of the foot forces the calf muscles to contract. When a limb is held in a contracted position over time, the muscles shorten.

To see if wearing high heels had the same shortening effect on calf muscles, the researchers recruited 11 women who had been wearing 5 centimeter heels for at least two years and who felt uncomfortable walking without them. They compared the heel wearers with a control group of 9 other (far more sensible) women who did not wear high heels.

One surprising finding was that both groups of women had similar sized calf muscles. But the researchers also found that wearing heels affected muscle fiber length--the high heel wearers' muscle fibers were 13 percent shorter than those who wore flat shoes.

The Achilles' tendon, meanwhile--which attaches the calf muscle to the heel--compensated by growing bulkier and tighter. For some women, once the heels come off, the pain starts because the muscles can't stretch enough, the researchers said.

Wearing a variety of different types of shoes and stretching may help alleviate the pain, according to the study authors. But Chicago podiatrist Steve Weinberg, who was not involved with the study, questioned whether it's possible to stretch the Achilles tendon enough to make a clinical difference.

"The elasticity of tendinous tissue may always be improved by stretching exercise, although this may prove to be tedious work once tendons have already stiffened," said study co-author Robert Csapo of the University of Vienna. "Presumably, prevention is better than cure."

Ditching high heels, an extremely unlikely solution, could also reduce a number of other hazards, including nerve damage, ankle sprains from toppling over and exacerbating pre-existing conditions in the toes, such as bunions, hammertoes and nerve damage.

Age spots—benign, flat areas of hyperpigmentation—usually pop up on the hands and face, most commonly on the forehead. These tan, brown, or gray flecks are also called “sun spots” because they occur largely as a result of sun damage. Ultraviolet (UV) rays activate the skin’s pigment-producing cells, called melanocytes. Too much UV exposure damages the melanocytes, causing them to crank out excess pigment (also called melanin) or to clump together and form dark spots on the skin.

But the true cause of age spots begins deep within the skin, believes Benjamin Johnson, MD, founder of Osmosis Pür Skin Care. “Excess UV exposure causes damage to the dermal-epidermal junction, which prevents delivery of antioxidants to the epidermis,” he explains.

“The skin ages sporadically, and we can’t always say why a spot shows up in one place versus somewhere else.” However, Johnson suggests that spots form in areas that have endured so much trauma from excess sun exposure that they no longer receive adequate anti-oxidant supply from the dermis. This results in free-radical damage to the melanocytes, which triggers irregular melanin production and compounds the problem.

Conventional treatment for hyperpigmentation includes bleach, specifically hydroquinone or tretinoin (Retin-A), which carry serious health risks like cancer, reproductive toxicity, and skin allergies. Also common are cryotherapy (freezing) and light therapy (either laser or intense pulsed light). Although effective and relatively safe, both of these treatments can cost thousands of dollars.

“Air-Conditioning Is Terrible for the Earth -- Here's How to Live Without It” caught my attention. My response to the article’s premise that we just have to learn to live without air conditioning is a definite, “Hell, no!” Yes, it is true that air conditioning uses a considerable amount of energy, which in turn increases carbon dioxide emissions. It’s a vicious cycle, to use an old cliché. Fortunately, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) invented the Desiccant-Enhanced eVaporative air conditioner (DEVap).

The DEVap has the potential to be 50 to 90 percent more energy efficient than traditional air conditioners. What it does is take the concept of evaporate coolers and make them work in all climates. It uses desiccants to solve the problem. Wikipedia defines a desiccant as a “substance that induces or sustains a state of dryness in its local vicinity in a moderately well-sealed container.”

According to the NREL, the DEVap “relies on the desiccants' capacity to create dry air using heat and evaporative coolers' capacity to take dry air and make cold air.” In other words, it allows the DEVap to cool a place down despite the humidity in the air or the extremely high temperatures that occur in areas with dry heat, like the San Joaquin Valley of California. As everyone knows, the traditional swamp cooler just does not work in humid areas or when the temperatures rise over 100 degrees in a hot, dry area.

Eric Kozubal, co-inventor of the DEVap, says that the idea of it is to “revolutionize cooling, while removing millions of metric tons of carbon from the air.”

"We'd been working with membranes, evaporative coolers and desiccants. We saw an opportunity to combine them into a single device for a product with unique capabilities,” Kozubal adds.

A great feature of the DEVap is that it uses “highly concentrated aqueous salt solutions of lithium chloride or calcium chloride,” as the NREL describes, as desiccants. The salt solutions, unlike refrigerants, do not produce chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) or hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs). One pound of CFC or HCFC in air conditioners using refrigerants adds up to 2,000 pounds of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere.

The bad news is that it will be a few years before DEVap air conditioners are on the market. When they are available, they will save consumers money, and the environment at the same time.

Child Rapist Polanski A Free Man

Switzerland announced today that it will not extradite film director Roman Polanski to the United States to face his conviction for unlawful sex with a 13-year-old girl. Polanski had been arrested on an international warranted issued by the United States on charges dating back to 1977. He had originally been charged with six offenses including rape and sodomy. He pleaded guilty to unlawful sex following a plea bargain that included a promise he'd serve at least 42 days in a US prison. But the director led the United States on the eve of his sentencing because of a fear he'd face more prison time than the agreed-upon 42 days.

The result of the Swiss decision means that Polanski is a free man.

Swiss justice ministry officials said that they based their decision in part because US authorities had failed to provide confidential testimony about Polanski's original sentencing procedure. According to the Swiss, US authorities needed to clarify the length of sentence Polanski was facing and therefore failed to make a convincing case for extradition.

According to the Swiss, this decision cannot be appealed.

Polanski has had a lot of apologists, and as news of the Swiss decision was announced they all expressed their enthusiastic support for one of the "great" directors of all time. The problem, of course, is that artistic opinion is subjective, but application of the law should be objective. Polanski has never denied that he fed his victim drugs and then proceeded to have sex with her. Instead, he and his supporters have offered the "its no big deal" excuse because it was the 1970's and he's Roman Polanski.

The problem, of course, is that Polanski is a rapist. And it doesn't matter how great an artist some may find him, he still pled guilty to felony criminal sex charges and then couldn't man up to do his time. And this behavior was accepted by and enabled by not just parts of Hollywood but the government of France. The result was a de facto international endorsement of child rape.

Those who hoped for Polanski's extradition did so not to make an example out of an elderly felon, but because justice demanded it. Once again we see race and privilege taking priority over blind application of the law. Polanski's art was ultimately more valuable than the dignity of the young girl he drugged and raped, a fact that speaks volumes to the value we place on the lives and the dignity of all women.

I've been a lover of perfume since I was a small child. I loved to examine my mom's collection of pretty perfume bottles, neatly arranged on top of her dresser. Like the scarves in her closet, they were lovely and mysterious. When I was old enough, my mother would spritz my wrist with whatever scent she was wearing at the time. Then, like many girls of my generation, I got my very own perfume: Love's Baby Soft. Oh, how I loved to spray myself with that sweet scent.

That was then. Today, I wouldn't dare use any of those commercially made perfumes. You pick your poison and I've decided that perfume ain't the one for me. One of the tougher lessons I've learned since becoming aware of the dangers of personal care products is that most perfumes contain chemical toxins I don't want on or anywhere near my body. Worst of all: you don't really know what those toxins are because of old laws protecting perfume makers from revealing their trade secrets. And this applies to all products, not only perfumes. When you see the word "fragrance" on a label, you're being hoodwinked. "Fragrance" can include numerous chemicals that are not good for you (or the environment).

How bad can a little perfume be, right? Wrong--unless you're okay with using chemicals classified as hormone disruptors that can increase your risk of cancer, or harm a developing fetus, or contribute to thyroid and other problems. It's even worse when you consider how many other products we use regularly and how many other environmental toxins we're exposed to. It's black and white for me: if I know it could be bad for me, I'm not gonna use it.

After my enlightenment a few years ago--feeling like I was a graduate of the beauty school of hard knocks--I was faced with my own dresser of pretty perfume bottles I had collected over the years. They had to go. But what I discovered was more delightful than I could have imagined: there are pure and safe and stunningly beautiful perfumes being made that are far superior to the ones I had used. Now, I am a lover of perfumes made from pure essential oils--nothing artificial, nothing toxic.

In an environment where religion pervades every aspect of society, Kelantan, the northern-most state in Peninsular Malaysia - and the only state that has been ruled by an Islamic party for over 20 years - faces challenges around condom usage, polygamy, remarriage and drug use. Marina Mahathir, president of the Malaysian AIDS Foundation, released a study on HIV-positive widows in Kota Baru, Kelantan during the 8th ICAAP. Here she talks to TerraViva's Karen Yap Lih Huey about what could be done in such delicate environment without unsettling religious norms.

TerraViva: Tell me more about polygamy in Kelantan and how it affects HIV and AIDS initiatives there. Also, in your presentation you mentioned that Kelantan is becoming anarea containing high-risk groups.

A: There is a lot of drug usage among both men and women in Kelantan. A lot of these women got infected from their husbands who were injecting drug users. So, the link between drug usage and infection is very clear.

As Kelantan custom supports remarriage by both men and women, many widowed HIV- positive women may look to marriage in order to ensure their own economic survival. Many of these will be polygamous marriages, which are sanctioned by the state and society. This poses risks to co-wives in the same arrangements.

In 2006, Kelantan also instituted mandatory premarital testing for Muslim couples. This may pose problems for those HIV-positive women intending marriage, even though normally HIV-positive people are not prevented from marrying. Issues of stigmatisation and loss of potential economic support may arise. In 2000, the fertility rate in Kelantan was the highest compared to other states in Malaysia and on average, most families in Kelantan have five children. This high fertility rate could have a direct impact on vertical transmission from mother to child.

From the study, this is what we know: A lot of these women are HIV-positive widows. They don't have any means of earning money. They are young, they are well and many of them look to men for support. So, they need to get married.

On top of that, there is no stigma of women getting married many times. The stigma is on women who are single or divorced or widowed. The women in Kelantan do marry many times and it's common. Therefore, they can do it if they wanted to. But what we found didn't really support it because in our study, only six women remarried. The others were just too engrossed with their problems of being HIV-positive and how to fight it. Remarriage didn't figure very highly.

However, it's interesting to note that they marry very poor men, not well-off men, partly because the social circle they are in is not very big hence their choices of spouses are minimal. In a way, they didn't prove our assumption. Having said that, we think there is an issue among these women. They don't have much in the way of support while the support from family is little.

TerraViva: About the high drug usage in Kelantan, is it because of the drug trade route that runs into Kelantan from neighbouring Thailand?

A: No. It's not because of the drug trade. Drug usage is all over and it's easy to obtain drugs anywhere. In Terengganu, the fisherman takes it. In the social context of Kelantan, the people are very poor. There are not much job opportunities there. And what can these people do to kill the boredom? They take drugs. It's easily available and very common in the villages. It's not a matter of being in the trafficking route. It's a matter of availability.

TerraViva: In Kelantan, people are conservative. How do you tell these people to use condoms?

A: In Islam, condom is not banned. You just have to tell the men to use. The women (in the study) didn't think the condoms are religiously wrong. But the men usually think it is. It's actually a manifestation of their own reluctance -- and it's easy for them to cult it in religious terms. So, there is room to manoeuvre there. Unlike Christianity, where the rules are clear, in Islam, they not clear. The problem is to get the right authority to say so - at least within the context of marriage. It's something that is not happening here yet.

TerraViva: How sure are you that the Muslims in Kelantan would be able to accept this and get it off the ground? Surely, you need political will or leadership.

A: Of course, I mean it takes a lot of work, but it can be done. We have to train the religious leaders. Once you talk to them and educate them, they can change. We can take examples from elsewhere. The Majlis Fatwa in Indonesia said that with married couples, it's all right to use condoms. It can be done. We are not talking about extramarital sex or affairs. So, it's perfectly legal but the point is to get the right people to say it, using the right religious context, and getting the social and psychological support. It can be done. I'm quite hopeful of that.

TerraViva: How do you see Kelantan's future?

A: I don't have to extrapolate too much from this study -- it's interesting because of the numbers and what it yields. It's also because of the Kelantan context -- the cultural context. Having said that, I feel it's important to take this study further. We don't have a study on women with HIV and AIDS in Malaysia. Anyone who wants to add it, please be my guest. Once we are back in Malaysia, I think we will publish this study and get someone to respond to it.

The most alarming thing about the study is the low level of knowledge on HIV in Kelantan. They don't know anything about HIV. It's as simple as that. And yet, the government in Kelantan is testing people and these people don't understand why. They think it's just a routine or another step before getting married. They just do it. There's an opportunity lost there. The study is a good start and hopefully we'll get someone to expand on it. Just to say that it's Kota Baru, who knows what it's like in other cities or towns where there is no way of knowing or reaching them.

(In the Kelantan study, a total of 56 HIV-positive women were recruited and both quantitative and qualitative methods were used. In Kota Baru, Kelantan, the number of HIV-positive widows has been increasing at an alarming rate. In a religious and cultural environment where polygamy is acceptable, there is uncertainty about how women with HIV manage risk and their ability to prevent HIV transmission to their partners.)

Kelantan Government to HIV Sufferers: Don't Fall in Love, Don't Have Kids

Earlier this year the Kelantan government launched a health campaign that asked people not fall in love with HIV sufferers. This was part of a drive to curb increasing HIV infection rates in the northern-most state of Peninsular Malaysia.

Now reports claim that last week a top women's health official for the Islamic party run state developed this line of action further by urging HIV sufferers not to procreate:

Its Women Development, Family and Health committee chairman Wan Ubaidah Omar, in issuing the advice, said the number of HIV/AIDS cases in the state was on the rise, adding that this was the reason why more education was needed for target groups.

“Couples with HIV should not have children. This will give rise to the unwanted statistics, which are already alarming,” she said during the question-and-answer session yesterday.

Wan Ubaidah was answering a question from Datuk Noor Zahidi Omar (BN-Pengkalan Kubor), who asked whether the state government was aware that Kelantan had the highest number of HIV/AIDS patients in Malaysia.

The chairman also repeated the government's previous message, telling the State Assembly: "My other advice is not to fall in love with anyone suffering from the disease.”

As of 2006 Kelantan health policy has mandated HIV testing for those who wish to get married, but it does not actually restrict HIV infected people from being joined in marriage once their HIV status is discovered.

The dire need to get infection rates under control in Kentalan was highlighted in 2009 when the Women Development, Family and Health committee released statistics that showed a sharp rise in infection rates through sexual activity with a reported 49% rise in adults aged 30 to 39.

A 2007 article which features a discussion with Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir, president of the Malaysian AIDS Foundation, highlights a startling lack of knowledge over HIV/AIDS and how the virus was transmitted. In the article, Marina Mahathir discusses the findings of a recent study involving HIV-positive widows in Kota Baru, Kelantan:

“The women said they always reminded their husbands to use a condom but they do not always use it because they dislike condoms, do not have one at hand, or want to have a child,” said Malaysian AIDS Foundation advisor Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir at the Eighth International Congress on HIV/AIDS (Icaap) here in Sri Lanka at a session on married women’s vulnerability towards HIV/AIDS.

At the conference, married monogamous women have been cited as an emerging group most vulnerable to HIV infection, and among the most silent sufferers of the epidemic.

Marina was citing a study that she carried out with University Malaya post-graduate student Sumathi Govindasamy of 56 HIV+ widows in Kota Baru, Kelantan, to explore the issues and challenges they face.

Interestingly, the article notes that many women will not remarry because they would have to disclose their HIV status as per the 2006 mandate. This risks them being twice shunned, first as single women and second as HIV sufferers. The article continues:

“All of the women surveyed were infected by their late husbands, and 80% were married to injecting drug users. However, they continued having unsafe sex with their husbands even after learning about their injecting behaviour," said Marina.

“Some 53% of these women were still not sure if it was the drugs, or the act of injecting that caused the HIV infection. It was evident that basic knowledge on HIV transmission risk is low even now among these women,” she added.

Rather than educating on how the virus is contracted, it seems that the government's approach is to plead with married HIV sufferers that they abstain from having children, while asking single HIV sufferers to simply abstain from sexual relationships completely. At the same time, the government has been trying to reinforce its perception of moral standards, especially among Kelantan's youth, all in the hope that this will curb infection rates. This is something that the Women Development, Family and Health committee chairman also drew on last week during the aforementioned conference:

"Among the reasons for such occurrences [of increasing HIV infections rates] are the Internet and television and entertainment activities that contribute to sexual activities among the younger generation and the government will continue with its campaign to educate the younger generation about the ills of illicit sex."

The government's advice that people should shun falling in love with someone who is infected with HIV is degrading to the individual and, to my mind, oversteps the mark of prudent policy. So too does it seem rather futile to point a finger at things like the Internet and television as being the cause of increasing HIV infection rates only to try to remedy the issue with lessons in morality against "the ills of illicit sex" even though they have so far failed to yield a desirable result and most likely won't do any better in the near future.

Rather than this, improving female health education seems paramount to stemming HIV rates, as is the need for increasing HIV screenings so as to detect asymptomatic carriers in the first place. But all this must be considered alongside the cultural context of the predominantly Muslim state.

Inescapable, of course, is the issue of polygamous marriage which is accepted in Kelantan. Therein lies the importance of educating men about HIV and condom use. Despite information to the contrary, it is not necessarily against the tenets of Islam to use condoms within marriage as this second interview with Marina Mahathir points out. Getting that message out to men through first calling on local religious leaders and educating them is one solution that Marina Mahathir suggests, with the hope that this information will, in turn, trickle down to men with multiple wives who are at an obvious risk of both contracting and spreading the virus.

Yet through it all, educating women so that they can manage their own sexual health, maternal health and HIV exposure risk must be a central focus. As Marina Mahathir notes about her relatively small study:

"The most alarming thing about the study is the low level of knowledge on HIV in Kelantan. They don't know anything about HIV. It's as simple as that. And yet, the government in Kelantan is testing people and these people don't understand why. They think it's just a routine or another step before getting married. They just do it. There's an opportunity lost there."

One Million Iraqi Widows and Counting

The Iraqi government estimates about 100,000 women have lost their husbands in the U.S. invasion. With three decades of war, including the 1980-88 war with Iran and the Gulf War, a total of 1 million women are widows.

In 2008 the government set up the Directorate of Social Care for Women, but chief Nahdah Hameed claims it does not have enough funds to serve women beyond Baghdad. In addition the Directorate does not have the power to introduce reform and fight corruption in the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, which handles widows' cases.

Iraqi Widows Organization is a non-governmental organization that was established in 2004 to empower widows and raise their role in civil society. IWO provides education and job opportunities to women, as well as small loans so that widows may start their own businesses. The organization also looks to fight discrimination against women by informing them of their rights and supporting them in their role in creating the new constitution for the "New Iraq."

Still, being the sole breadwinner of the family pushes many women into poverty, limiting their options. Oxfam International Executive Director Jeremy Hobbs commented, "A whole generation of Iraqis are at risk. Mothers are being forced to make tough choices, such as whether to pay for their children to go to school and receive health care, or to pay for private power and water services. These are choices no mother should have to make. And they are not only threatening individual families, they are also threatening the future of Iraq itself."

Pregnant women 'must take vitamin D supplements'

The team at University College London Institute of Child Health says official bodies currently offer conflicting advice.

Writing in the British Journal of Nutrition, they say there is a "strong case" for a daily dose of vitamin D in pregnancy.

But one leading expert said more evidence was needed.

The Department of Health advises pregnant women to ensure they receive a certain level of vitamin D - 10 micrograms per day. The researchers say this in effect endorses use of supplements, because diet and the sun provide too little.

But the National Institute of health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) said in its guidance that it did not support supplements.

It has instead said that women should simply "be informed" about the importance of having adequate vitamin D levels during their pregnancy and while breastfeeding - adding that some women may choose to do this via supplements.

Additionally, pregnant women on low incomes are entitled to a range of nutrients - including vitamin D - as part of the Healthy Start Scheme.

Scientists May Have Invented First Male Birth Control Pill

Because this year was the 50th anniversary of the female birth control pill's approval by the FDA, there was much discussion in the past few months about just why there hasn't been a male contraceptive pill. Some Israeli scientists, though, may have fixed that conundrum: they discovered a pill that works on mice by stripping sperm of the protein needed to fertilize an egg, essentially rendering the mice sterile for between one and three months.

The researchers plan to start human trials of the pill next year, and if the trials go smoothly, the pill could be available to the public in as little as three years. Needless to say, this is an amazing breakthrough, especially since the pill would only need to be taken every month or so. One of the major concerns, especially for women, is that men would forget to take the pill (although, as I pointed out in my post a few months ago, most studies show that fewer women have this fear than the media would have us believe), but with this medication, the researchers argue that men would be more likely to remember.

The researchers also reported that there seemed to be no negative side effects among the mice, which is another bonus - potential impotence was another feared result of a male contraceptive pill (although no one seems to care particularly that female birth control can also dampen women's sex drives). For men, there would be no hormonal side effects.

So it looks like we can begin to get excited about the potential for this new innovation, although I wouldn't uncork the champagne yet. There's a running joke that the male birth control pill has been five to ten years away for the past fifty years, and until the pill is out of trials and on the shelves, I'm still not going to hold my breath.

What is engine oil?

Motor oil, or engine oil, is an oil used for lubrication of various internal combustion engines. While the main function is to lubricate moving parts, motor oil also cleans, inhibits corrosion, improves sealing and cools the engine by carrying heat away from moving parts.

Rubbing of metal engine parts inevitably produces some microscopic metallic particles from the wearing of the surfaces. Such particles could circulate in the oil and grind against moving parts, causing wear. Because particles accumulate in the oil, it is typically circulated through an oil filter to remove harmful particles. An oil pump, a vane or gear pump powered by the engine, pumps the oil throughout the engine, including the oil filter. Oil filters can be a full flow or bypass type.

In the crankcase of a vehicle engine, motor oil lubricates rotating or sliding surfaces between the crankshaft journal bearings (main bearings and big-end bearings), and rods connecting the pistons to the crankshaft. The oil collects in an oil pan, or sump, at the bottom of the crankcase. In some small engines such as lawn mower engines, dippers on the bottoms of connecting rods dip into the oil at the bottom and splash it around the crankcase as needed to lubricate parts inside. In modern vehicle engines, the oil pump takes oil from the oil pan and sends it through the oil filter into oil galleries, from which the oil lubricates the main bearings holding the crankshaft up at the main journals and camshaft bearings operating the valves. In typical modern vehicles, oil pressure-fed from the oil galleries to the main bearings enters holes in the main journals of the crankshaft. From these holes in the main journals, the oil moves through passageways inside the crankshaft to exit holes in the rod journals to lubricate the rod bearings and connecting rods. Some simpler designs relied on these rapidly moving parts to splash and lubricate the contacting surfaces between the piston rings and interior surfaces of the cylinders. However, in modern designs, there are also passageways through the rods which carry oil from the rod bearings to the rod-piston connections and lubricate the contacting surfaces between the piston rings and interior surfaces of the cylinders. This oil film also serves as a seal between the piston rings and cylinder walls to separate the combustion chamber in the cylinder head from the crankcase. Women and human rights activists met in front of the Saudi Arabian Embassy in D.C. Saturday to protest the country's treatment of women. The Washington Times reported about the impending event Friday,

Supporters of women's rights will hold a protest Saturday to denounce gender apartheid in Saudi Arabia.

"This may be like the pied piper for Islamic feminists," said Fatima Thompson, a Muslim convert and a board member for the D.C. chapter of the Muslims for Progressive Values (MPV), which is organizing the event. "They have created all these various organizations to promote women's rights, so hopefully this will be a means to get us all together."

The MPV, which is an "inclusive community" rooted in social justice, will hold the protest in front of the Saudi Arabian Embassy.

Banyak persoalan yang timbul dalam programRm50.

Betul ke boleh jadi jutawan????

Banyak panggilan yang diterima dan sms ...apa yang boleh jawab..betul la tu..

Betul sekiranya semua prospek masuk tanpa ragu-ragu. Tapi kita semua masih belum percaya,hakikatnya saya peringkat awal pun tidak percaya dan ragu-ragu.

Sebab apa saya masuk?

Saya pada permulaannya masuk dalam ganda10. Kalau dia orang nak tipu. Tipulah rm10..

Bila masuk gandarm10, pasang banner di merata tempat. Alhamdulillah... kira boleh buat duit.

Nak tipu dimana?

Kalau penaja yang tipu mungkin. Tapi kalau penaja menipu..Rasanya kita boleh contact admin.

Tidak ada masalah kalau kena tipu,janji ada bukti seperti salinan resit on line.

Kalau penaja ditipu adalah Hehe...Pernah terjadi pada saya.

Kalau join dapat apa?

Mintak tolong sana sini..Kira inilah blog pertama saya. Janji keluar internet. Yang kedua dapat produk..produk apa?..produknya buku yang boleh kita belajar buat duit di internet. Bagus buku tu, nak beli dikedai memang tak beli lah..

Nasihat saya..

Kena berhati-hati , ada 2 hingga 3 program yang tidak boleh buat duit. Nak tahu program dimana??(itu kena email pada saya)..

The Proton Gen-2 is an automobile manufactured by Malaysian carmaker Proton, and was launched in the third quarter of 2004. The Gen-2 uses a platform which has been extensively developed in-house by Proton and their partner Lotus. Initially codenamed theProton Wira Replacement Model, it was hinted that the car was to replace the Proton Wira. The name Gen-2 is an abbreviation ofGeneration 2, to symbolized the second generation of the very successful Wira as the first generation.

The Gen-2 was among the first cars to be produced in Proton's Tanjung Malim plant, developed as part of its Proton City development project.

The Gen-2's platform is also used by the Proton Satria Neo (with a shortened wheelbase) and the Proton Persona (with an extended rear hang to form a more sedan-like body).
